Kohala was hit by a powerful combination of 30 to 60 MPH Kona winds with High surf and tides during the week of Jan. 29 to Feb. 2, 2007. A boat that had been moored off shore at Mahukona was ripped from its lines and tossed onto the rocks the evening of Jan. 31. By the next afternoon, the boat had been completely shredded apart by the heavy surf and high winds. Locals who knew the boat owners were saddened by the loss but also surprised the boat had not been moved before the winter weather struck.
